Playground Trauma

Boy oh boy do I feel like a kid again! Let's see... this week I have played quite a few mean games of handball, a little bit of everyone's favorite (Frisbee), freeze tag, swung on swings, fought over a ball, played BINGO, had my hair braided, ate at snack time, went to the park, played UNO Rugrats, teamed up with a fourth grader against a 4th grader, a 3rd grader, and a 2nd grader playing SPUD, done homework, went one on one basketball with a 4th grader, and played Trivia Pursuit jr.

Dang... and these kids are competitive too! And do I let them win? Heck no! I wasn't the best handball player when I was a kid, I wasn't very quick or the top of my class either. So this is MY time!

I still remember two summers ago when I would race my units of 4th-6th graders the width of the pool. Sushi would just sit in the lifeguard chair shaking her head as she watched me kick their puny butts even giving them head starts and everything. She would tell me... "Frisbee, you are going to give them low self esteem." I felt bad, so did I let them win? Nope, I just stopped racing them. Oh the joys of power trips.

I swear I'm not a bad person... I don't nail 3rd graders with a dodgeball and brake wrists or anything... no... THAT didn't happen this week either... *cough*jrhighkid*cough*iwasntthestaffincharge*cough* But this is what I learned... the playground is a rough place, and you gotta take it with stride. Like when I mess up at handball I just walk away and get back in line. Some of those kids though... with their blood pressure... it's scary. Also, when you are playig SPUD and they say you got a SP, just go with it... kids are vicious for popsicles. Even though I lost... my 4th grade buddy pulled of the win! :o) And yes, she's my little Maven Jr.

Pick on someone your own size. Like maybe a 6th grader. :)

Swimming with fourth graders is one thing . . . arm wrestling your just "coming of age" sixth grade boys who perceive an overwhelming burden to display their masculinity is quite another . . .

At least in this regard, you are SO lucky for not being a guy . . .

I don't know what I would say... but I have a super funny story about heidi, me, a 1st grader, a 3rd grader, and yes, sadly enough a kinder. Old Maid rocks. This is a better story in person though, so until then I'll leave it all up to your imaginations!
