Indecision 2004

The two things you are not supposed to talk about at dinner parties... religion and politics. Well, I don't see soup and salad, so here goes the politics talk.

This morning I stopped at 7-11 to get a cup of coffee. Man, I think it might be my new starbucks. :o) We will have to see, but my coffee was super good. I know I will miss the iced drinks though. Anyway, tangent, sorry. I went to grab a cup, and this is what had to choose from...

I mean, dang, it's not even November and they want me to actually choose between these two? Seriously, my first reaction was to look for another cup that had nothing on it, but dammit, they were the only 20 oz cups to be seen. The next reaction was to see if the cup actually only had one candidate on it or if there was one with both. Dang, I know there are some of you who are going to kill me... i.e. Alex and Deanne who are going to move out of the country if Bush is elected, Robert who IS moving out of the country to join the peace corps because he needs to get away and thinks if Bush wins, well public health will go to crap, and then there's Whitney, Joanna, and Amanda who are think any breathing body is better than Bush. Then we have the Bush supporters... well I think, because they are a heck of a lot quieter than the Kill Bushers. I will actually leave them nameless at this moment. I don't want any finger pointing.

My point is... I bet you are all wondering which cup I ended up with... well I picked up the Kerry cup. Will I vote for the guy? No clue... carrying a cup around and voting are two totally different things. I didn't want the scrutiny of walking around with a Bush cup. Right now I don't have the need to pick a name out of a hat for president. That's what I feel like I'm doing. I don't want to have to vote for the lesser of the two evils, and I think that's a popular opinion too. Don't get me wrong, I want to vote, and I will vote. I just want to hear something supporting Kerry that doesn't have anything to do with Bush, and I want to hear something supporting Bush that doesn't have anything to do with the War. Is that too hard to ask?

You probably are right. I should just skip the whole president vote all together... just obstain. But I still want to get in there and vote for the other things that I do have opinions about. I really haven't taken the complete time to research the two of them, I'll admit it. I know where they stand in general, but I just have this odd gut feeling that Bush is going to really screw up, and I don't trust Kerry. I don't know which angle is better.

I can always repect those that support a candidate on issues. I guess I just hate the loud idiots that see the elephant and want a kiddie ride, or that like the donkey because Shrek was such a cool move.

You're right... I think most people in this election are planning to vote against a candidate instead of for. This is unfortunate. I keep asking my students, who think they have to vote a certain way because of their ethnicity, "what is your candidate going to do for you?"

As Mo points out, you can examine what a candidate says and does, and vote on that. I tend to go for the one whose record reflects honesty. Bad choices are one thing; lies, deception, and "flip-flopping" are another.

Perhaps you should have asked the 7-11 guy where the Nader cups were!

Erm, I'm actually voting for Kerry more than I am against Bush. Don't get me wrong, there are other people that I would have rather had be president (i.e. Dennis Kucinich), but I digress.

Oh, and go with the cup. However, if you want some facts, www.johnkerry.com and www.georgewbush.com.

I feel the need to spread what is already public knowledge, but still.
